A GOOD REMINDER FOR ALL CYCLISTS
These safety guidelines are a good reminder for all cyclists, whether they are riding with one of The Bike Shop’s organized rides or not. Please note that any rider participating in an event organized by The Bike Shop is expected to follow these safety guidelines. It is critical that every rider follow these safety rules to ensure both their own safety and the safety of those around them. The DMV website also has some good safety tips for bicyclists and motorists sharing the road.
⦁ Brakes must be in safe operating condition and working properly.
⦁ Derailleurs and chain should be clean and adjusted properly.
⦁ Frame should have no cracks and wheels should be straight.
⦁ Cables should not be frayed and should be lubed.
⦁ Water bottles should fit snug in the bottle cages.
⦁ Carry your own pump/air cartridges, spare tube, tire levers, tools, etc.
⦁ Assure proper bike fit for a safe and comfortable ride. [To be checked for proper fit, ask us about getting a BikeFit!]
⦁ Glasses- It is recommended to wear glasses to protect your eyes from the sun and any debris you may come in contact with.
⦁ Gloves – It is suggested that gloves are worn, whether fingerless or with fingers.
⦁ Clothing – You should have proper fitting and comfortable cycling clothing.
⦁ Shoes – Shoes with cleats are recommended.
⦁ Headphones – We recommend not using headphones while you are out riding. But if you feel the need to listen to music, you must only use them in one ear. Riders must be able to hear others calling out hazards, turns, stops, flats, etc.
⦁ Carry identification (e.g. Driver’s License).
⦁ Know your limits. Do not push yourself into unsafe situations.
⦁ No abrupt moves. No hard braking. No fast swerving.
⦁ Hold your line in the turns.
⦁ Verbally call out if there are hazards in the road (e.g. hole, car up, car back, flat, stopping, turning, etc.).
⦁ Use hand signals (e.g. slowing, turning, etc.).
⦁ Respect all drivers of cars and trucks.
⦁ Ride in bike lanes if available.
⦁ Stay as far right as practicable.
⦁ When riding single-track, yield to uphill traffic.
⦁ Take the middle of the lane when it would be dangerous to be passed by a vehicle.
⦁ Pass riders on their left and call out “on your left” as you pass.
⦁ Leave the road completely when stopping to re-group or make repairs.
⦁ California Penal Code 374.4 – Put trash in pockets or trash cans.
⦁ Be courteous at all times and stop to help others as needed.
⦁ If you will be joining the group after the ride has started, please inform the Ride Leader.
⦁ If leaving the group, please let others in the group know.
⦁ Encourage others to follow safe cycling practices.
⦁ Have fun and ride safely!
